CMS hails law change on EV charging points as 'major leap forward'

Commercial Maintenance Services (CMS) UK Ltd has described the requirement that all new homes and commercial buildings must be fitted with electric vehicle charging stations as a “major leap forward” in the creation of a practical nationwide network.

Adam Bartle, the company’s head of renewables, said the announcement (Monday 22nd November) – which also applies to commercial premises undergoing major refurbishment – will prove a major boost to the government’s 2030 net zero commitments.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that the new law will see 145,000 extra EV charging points installed in England.

Britain currently has around 25,000 charging points, but the Competition and Markets authority has warned that it needs ten times as many before 2030.

Adam Bartle said that while the new requirements will focus the minds on those developing or refurbishing commercial buildings, such as supermarkets and workplaces, in the run-up to 2030 when the sale of new petrol and diesel cars ends.

With more than two decades experience in the commercial and industrial facilities maintenance sector, CMS launched its EV charging installation service earlier this year in response to a growing number of enquiries across the UK.

Adam said: “We are already experiencing a rising demand for the installation and maintenance of EV charging stations – with major hotel chains and the healthcare sector leading the way.

“There is increasing awareness from both commercial and public sector organisations of the need to improve their sustainability.

“However, businesses also recognise that electric vehicles are the future, and they must respond by installing charging infrastructure, to meet the needs of their employees, customers and visitors.

“This rule change represents a major leap forward in dramatically expanding the charging network to ensure it can support the expanding number of EV owners.”

The Gateshead-headquartered company is one of the UK’s leading facilities maintenance companies, involved in the design, installation, maintenance, and repair of business-critical systems, including heating, plumbing, electricals, fire safety and air conditioning, across multiple sectors.
