From Firsts to Far Beyond: Celebrating Women Who Redefine What’s Possible

This International Women’s History Month, we celebrate the women who continue to push boundaries, challenge expectations, and redefine what’s possible

One of the most exciting milestones in modern space exploration is the upcoming Artemis II mission. As part of this historic journey, Christina Koch is set to become the first woman to travel beyond low Earth orbit — travelling around the Moon and farther from Earth than any woman in history. It marks a defining moment not just for space exploration, but for representation in STEM on a global scale.

A Record-Breaking Career

Christina Koch is no stranger to making history. She previously set the record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, spending 328 consecutive days aboard the International Space Station. Her mission demonstrated extraordinary resilience, technical expertise, and leadership — qualities essential to advancing human exploration.

Her achievements represent more than personal milestones. They signal progress, possibility, and the growing presence of women at the forefront of scientific discovery.

Building on a Powerful Legacy

Koch’s journey builds on the legacy of Valentina Tereshkova, who made history in 1963 when she became the first woman in space aboard Vostok 6. At a time when spaceflight was still in its infancy, Tereshkova’s mission reshaped perceptions of who belonged in the cosmos.

From that first historic flight to future lunar missions, women have continually expanded the boundaries of human potential. Each generation stands on the shoulders of the pioneers before them — and inspires the pioneers yet to come.

Why This Matters

Representation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics is more than symbolic. Visibility creates opportunity. Achievement inspires ambition. When young women see leaders travelling to the Moon, breaking endurance records, and shaping the future of exploration, it reinforces a powerful message: there are no limits to what they can achieve.

CMS and International Women’s History Month

At CMS, we proudly support International Women’s History Month and the celebration of women’s achievements across every industry — from STEM and innovation to leadership and business.

We believe that recognising these milestones is essential to building a more inclusive future. By celebrating trailblazers who challenge boundaries and redefine possibility, we help inspire the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders.

From firsts to far beyond — the future is brighter because of the women who dare to lead it.
